Learning About the Heart

We learned about the heart. The heart is a muscle that pumps blood. If your heart stops pumping then you will die. The heart is red. It has 4 chambers. Your heart is as big as your fist. It pumps red and blue blood. You can feel your pulse near your neck. It was awesome learning about the heart. From the whole 2-0 class. ~Clay

Starting to learn about China

Today we started to learn about China.
We answered these questions:
What do you want to know about China?
What would you want to tell people in China about our country, town, home and school?
Why do you want to learn about other places in the world?
What do you think comes from China?
What do you know about China?

A Visit from the SPCA

A Visit From the SPCA

Courtney from the SPCA visited 2-O on October 6, 2010.
She told us about Sam, the homeless dog who found a home.
She brought Johanna her dashshend and a 5 year old

October 1st Family Letter

October 1, 2010

Dear Families,

Our Healthy Snack Sale was a big success. Thank you so much for your help sending in snacks. The NH SPCA in Stratham will really appreciate the money we raised to help the pets at the shelter. A guest from from NH-SPCA visited us soon.
In math we are working on addition facts. An addition fact is any one digit number added to another one digit number. For example 2+9 is a fact but 2+10 is a math problem. Second graders are encouraged to know all facts by memory or have an efficient way to find the answer for facts. We have worked with + 0, +1, Next week we’ll work with doubles facts (ex. 8+8), turn around facts (3+4 = 4+3) and +9 using the hundreds chart. Many seconds grader use the count on strategy. We played various games including beat the calculator. These jobs are rotated. One person calls the fact, ant the other two try to get the correct answer first – one uses a calculator and the other uses his or her brain. So far the brains are winning.
Last week sent home a hard cover math reference book. It was for you to look though and see the types of things we work on in math throughout the year. Your child also needed it for last week’s homework. Please send the math reference back to school, if you have not already done so, as we need it for other things here at school this year.
In reading we are starting Individual Directed Reading Assessments. (DRA’s) This will help us be able to fine tune your child reading program.
In writing second graders have been working at creating plans and writing stories from their plans. They are becoming much more fluent writers.
In Technology, second graders recorded their pet stories using photo story. I have our class blog accessible from our web page and we will have
class blogging as a job starting next week.
Have a great weekend!

September 17, 2010

Dear Parents,

Second grader did a great job sharing “This land is your land” in sign language in with the school.
This week we started Reading Conferences in Reader’s Workshop. Our mini lessons were on what the teacher and student do, and the rest of the class does during a reading conference. Second graders wrote stories about their pets and shared them with each other. We also had a lesson on coming up with topics to write about. We started a small notebook for “Things to write about.” In math we worked together to make a number grid from 0-1000. We worked with money and place value. We reviewed how important it is to practice skills in We practiced facts 1-10 with the penny plate game and talked about how the mathbox pages in our journals are meant as practice.
Next week we’ll work on counting in sequence using a calculator. We’ll use >,< and = signs and find other names for numbers for example 5 can also be called 2+3. Second grade Scientists have been outside observing and collecting data on the trees. Today we used the net books in the classroom. There are lots of routines and procedures to learn, but in the long run they will pay off. We are making on pet portraits.
Next Monday, 9/20 we will visit the book fair to preview books at 1:30. Next Tuesday, 9/21, is Picture Day. At 1:25 student may go to purchase books at the Book Fair.
Thursday night 9/23 is Open House for Parents at 7:00. Please, please, please come!
Have a great weekend!
